Online Structured Literacy Approach for Children with Reading Challenges, Including Dyslexia

Personalized Learning

Helping Your Child Build Confidence in Reading and Spelling

I offer personalized instruction designed to support automaticity in letter-sound connections, word recognition, and spelling. My approach focuses on practical, effective strategies for decoding and understanding words—making reading feel approachable and engaging.

Spelling is taught as an essential part of reading and writing—not just word memorization. I guide students in connecting sounds to letters, while introducing spelling rules and patterns that help make sense of English words. We explore conventional rules, such as when to double a letter or drop a silent ‘e’, and build early awareness of morphology, how word parts like roots, prefixes, and suffixes shape both spelling and meaning.

This kind of structured, intentional instruction supports core cognitive skills like memory, attention, and processing speed, helping children feel more confident and organized in their writing. I also integrate motor planning into handwriting practice using step-by-step methods that support consistent letter formation and reduce reversals with commonly confused letters like b and d.

What is Orton-Gillingham (O.G.)

Orton-Gillingham (O.G.) is a proven, research-based approach designed to support individuals with reading, spelling, and writing difficulties, including dyslexia. Rather than a single program, O.G. is a comprehensive approach to teaching that focuses on building strong word-reading skills through clear, step-by-step instruction.

A key part of Orton-Gillingham instruction is phonological awareness, which means learning to hear and work with the sounds in spoken language. Instruction begins with listening to and identifying sounds before moving to letters and words on the page. This sound-based, speech-to-print approach, grounded in the Science of Reading(SOR), helps students understand how sounds connect to letters and spelling patterns. By strengthening these listening and sound skills first, students build a solid foundation for reading and spelling success.

Multisensory Vowel Practice in Action

Learning to Read with Dyslexia

Orton-Gillingham is not just a method or a program but a comprehensive approach to teaching reading and spelling. It is designed to be:
  • Systematic and Explicit: OG provides clear, step-by-step instruction in reading and spelling that integrates multiple language skills.
  • Structured: The approach emphasizes teaching the structure of language, which includes the sound system (phonology) and the writing system (orthography).
  • The Orton-Gillingham approach is recognized by the International Dyslexia Association as an effective, evidence-based framework for teaching struggling readers.
O.G. uses a step-by-step approach based on how children learn language. Key elements include:
  • Decoding: Blending letter sounds to form words.
  • Word Analysis: Recognizing letters, retrieving sounds, holding sounds in memory, blending them, and understanding word meanings.
  • Reading Fluency: Mastering letter-sound correspondence and using contextual clues for accurate word recognition and comprehension.

My goal is simple: help your child become a confident, independent reader through structured, engaging, and personalized coaching. Every session is designed to build real skills and a genuine ‘I can do it‘ mindset.
